What to do when somebody stumps you
Awhile ago a reader wrote in and wanted to know:
“what do I do when someone stumps me? When they ask me a question that I don’t know the answer to?”
As you’re reading that I know what you’re thinking, “duh, tell them the truth”.
But… what you rationally say you would and what you actually do, is generally dead opposite, and more likely to be irrational.
This boils down to our underlying fear of looking incompetent.
When thrown into the mix, all eyes on you and you’re already feeling awkward, it can be hard to say you don’t know…. You don’t want to look like a boob.
But merely being aware of and thinking about it ahead of time negates the being caught off guard aspect and allows you to prepare and practice for it.
By the way, even though in the heat of the moment, you may feel like you’re being perceived as “incompetent” or “dumb” (pick your label), the truth is you’re actually building trust.
I would rather have someone tell me they don’t know the answer to my question, than have them make one up.
Usually, you can tell when they’re full of Malarkey anyway. Their body language changes and their filler words go through the roof.
90% of the salesman, presenters, politicians etc, talk out their rear. We, as a recipients of this nonsense are tired of it.
I actually find it refreshing, when someone straight up tells me, “Great question, I don’t know the answer to that”
And so will your audience.
Speaking of being asking questions….
