Why Speakers should become Writers

If you want to become a better speaking, become a better writer.

What?!, you say.

Hold your horses a second.

I’m not talking about just any kind of writing (though, all writing helps you become a better storyteller), I’m referring to Copywriting.

Studying copywriting will improve your public speaking

What is copywriting?

John E. Kennedy, a former Canadian mounted policeman who had entered advertising. “News is a technique of presentation, but advertising is a very simple thing. I can give it to you in three words, it is ‘salesmanship in print’”

In other words, to be a good copywriter you have to get good at selling on paper.

Study copywriting helps you understand the importance of every single word you use.

Words matter.

Words are emotionally charged.

Unfortunately, most people use TOO many when presenting. <<< referred as rambling or data dumping.

Copywriting will also force you to crawl into the minds of your readers to understand what moves them. What are their values and beliefs? What scares them?

This is particularly handy when it comes implementing the People part of our presentations system (the 7P’s of presenting). Knowing your audience is invaluable and is connected to all parts of the speaking event…. The offer, prep talk, language etc.

Lastly, it will allow you to see the value and power of a structure. Authors of copywriting books are extremely excellent at explaining why a certain sequence can stack the probably of compliance in your favor.

This translates 100% into persuasive speaking.

Structures sometimes called frameworks, give you a higher degree of success right out of the box. All you have to do is add your voice and content and you will have a winning presentation.
