Sh*t My Dad Says

From one of my favorite books ever:

“My parents had irrational fears of Mexico and assumed that once you crossed the border, drug runners made you swallow a heroin balloon and then within the hour you were in a bathtub full of ice and they were harvesting your kidneys.”

That’s from the book, Sh*t My Dad Says.

The book is authored by Justin Halpern, the son. It’s his recollection of his childhood growing up with his father.

It’s one of the funniest books I’ve ever read in my life. I don’t know if it’s because the dad reminds me of my grandpa or if it’s just because it’s downright funny–– All I can tell you is I laugh out loud.

Though the dad was very gruff, most of the time he gave great advice, just in his unique way.

And it’s full of metaphors.

For example, in the above quote, his parents were letting their minds create a worst-case scenario…. what could happen… what could possibly happen (things that will probably never happen)… making up crazy scenarios in their mind, that simply aren’t based in reality. It’s more likely to never happen than to happen.

This is exactly one of the causes of fear of public speaking. People create a scenario of what could happen, usually the worst case scenario. Like…

… forgetting what to say.

… nobody claps for them.

… nobody likes what they said.

… they’re going to look stupid.

And the probability of any these things happening is practically zero.

It’s all the mind games that we play with ourselves. You really only get rid of these games is when you truly understand this for yourself… When you’ve learn this for yourself.

The best way to learn this for yourself, is to get out there and speak a lot and realize that the scenario you had in your head was ridiculous and unjustified.

Said another way, experience.
