Paris futsballers, rappers and your personal stories

Paris street futsballers like the rappers be they can relate to personal stories. They touch them on a deep level. That’s what happens when you tell your personal story correct.

The back story:

Watching documentaries is one of the best ways I know of to grow as a human being (and autobiographies).

A well-produced documentary can give a glimpse into a life, culture, problem, that you may never encounter in your lifetime.

Recently, I was watching one on the slums of Paris.

Much of the documentary was about “street soccer” (futsal) and how its part of the history of ghetto life.

It doesn’t cost money to play and it’s the breeding ground for future International Soccer stars.

To me, it was very reminiscent of basketball in our inner cities.

But the thing that stood out the most to me was how interconnected the rappers were to the players and the players to the rappers.

It didn’t really hit home until one of the kids said, “I can connect with X Rapper because he really understands how life is here.”

Of course, it makes sense because the personal story should make your audience nod their head and think to themselves, “yep I’ve done that before or that’s exactly what I’m going through”

With a typical hero’s journey personal story, there is a life before the transformation and a life after the transformation.

When the rapper is telling how life was for him before he was famous is the “life before” part of the personal journey. And now, what we see as bragging, boasting of the woman, sports cars, and money, is the “life after” (freedom) part.

It doesn’t matter what country you live in. What your social economic status is, you must tell your personal story in order really affect people.
