I lost my thumb (no joke)
I’m back…
The last couple of emails I have been talking a lot about mindset, a lot about fear, a lot about overcoming adversity, and so now it’s time for me to put my money where my mouth is.
Some of you have noticed that I haven’t been sending out the daily emails… (Thanks for noticing!)
The reason why is, without going into great detail, I had an accident and lost the majority of my thumb.
So you can imagine, since this just happened a week ago, writing emails might be difficult…
But out of necessity comes innovation.
I haven’t typed one word of this email, I’m writing this email dictating each word to my handy-dandy Mac computer… pretty cool, right?
You might also imagine the emotional roller coaster of fear, anger, blame, self-pity etc., that I was/am experiencing.
I personally think that all of this is quite normal. But the difference between myself and some other folks is I will not allow myself to stay in those negative states very long.
PERIOD.
If there’s one lesson learned that I’m forever grateful from my time when I worked with Anthony Robbins, is that we have the power to make up the meanings in our lives.
We can’t control what happens to us, but we have 100% control in determining what those events mean to us.
So I CHOOSE to be positive about this, and to be thankful that it was just my thumb and not my whole hand, or arm. I CHOOSE to minimize it, though very traumatic, personal and real to me, at least it wasn’t cancer, deforming burns or a terminal diagnosis.
Life is but perspective… And there’s always someone who has it worse than you. No matter what is going on in my life I can always find something to be grateful for.
So what the heck does this have to do with public speaking influence?
I would venture to say everything. Your psychology impacts every aspect of your life.
Today’s email is a reminder about how important and powerful your psychology is. And how you are the master of YOUR psychology, how you are ultimately responsible for your emotions. If you’re freaked out to speak in front of small groups –– you caused that fear, nobody else.
It’s also a reminder that the fastest way to eliminate fear, worry and many other negative emotions is to find something to be thankful for.
And lastly, but certainly not least, is to give yourself permission to feel some of these negative emotions, it’s human, you’re not broken, you’re not weak, it’s normal… but never fool yourself into believing that you didn’t create that negative emotion, that negative feeling, and that ONLY you have the power to change it.
